• CB: Right after the opening scene of the trailer, we see your character rescue Tommy, known as Storm Shadow. I’d like to hear from you, did this happen between the two of them at the beginning of the movie?

GG: Yes. The first meeting between Snake Eyes and Tommy took place. And there’s something going on between them, because it’s a subconscious connection that I think they both feel from the beginning. I can’t exactly describe the specific situation they find themselves in, but Snake does save his ass, and so they have quite a friendly relationship at first. And, of course, we all know that Tommy is from the Arashikage clan, and he gives Snake Eyes a chance to change lives. He was, after all, a man who was actually in the junkyard. We meet him as a humble street kid. He’s a man who sort of drags through life with very negative, let’s call it that, missions and very misguided goals. So change was extremely necessary for him.

• CB: It sounds like that change starts with three challenges. Can you talk about what those three challenges were like and what it was like to take them on?

GG: Are you trying to kill me! These are warrior trials, and they are designed to test resilience and not just mental, but also test heart, strength, and overall willingness to sacrifice. Of course I won’t tell you exactly what it is, but it’s pretty much what it looks like.

• CB: At the end of the trailer we see the hero in full costume. How easy it was to put it on! How practical was he?

GG: He’s completely practical. It’s a display of amazing artistry by the phenomenal costume makers, and it took them so long to put it together and so many tests to make sure it functioned exactly the way it should, especially as far as the helmet is concerned. I have a big head, so not too many people would be able to wear it. And it fits very snugly. Most helmets are quite voluminous, but we wanted to make sure this one had as slim a profile as possible and fit exactly my head. “Claustrophobia is definitely a condition I experienced, especially in the beginning when I put it on and couldn’t take it off in time. But it was really, really cool to walk around in it and look through its visor.

• CB: We also talked to actor Andrew Koji. He said that one of the hardest things he had to learn was swordfighting. I would love to hear from you about that training element. How much effort did you have to put in?

GG: Yes, we worked four hours a day with the stunt team, all preparing to be in the best possible shape on the set. Of course, everything changes when filming starts. The environment dictates how much we can do from what we’ve rehearsed in the studio, like when we’re on a car carrier platform or standing on the roof of a building in rainy weather. So you have to be able to adapt as quickly as possible and learn new choreography within five minutes. And fortunately, all those two months of prepping us for that stage.

• CB: You’re very familiar with this character and the G.I. Joe universe. Did you have any idea what you wanted to see or do with the characters if you were able to go beyond this project?

GG: After we finished the work, we realized that we were bored and wanted more. We want to see how this story develops. So all I can say for now is that I want to know this story all the way through, and I don’t think it will end at this point, because there’s so much more potential. So far, it’s such a macro view of the whole universe. It’s one possible backstory. There’s so much to tell, and this is one aspect of one small sector of space. So the possibilities are endless, but I can give you roughly a direction of development. We have ideas for at least three movies.

What’s it like to exist in modern Hollywood as a woman of Asian descent? Have you encountered any obstacles?

I’m sure I have. Absolutely. But I learned pretty quickly that you have to surround yourself with, shall we say, the right people. Because you can’t change the way people think, you can’t control the way they think, how they will behave. But it is quite possible to make sure that the people around you are not only protective of you, but they want to be with you because of your qualities as a person. So far, I’ve been lucky in my whole career. I’ve been surrounded by people like that in every movie we’ve made. But, of course, I know that a lot of people my peers face something like that, and I’ve been very lucky to have been protected from that.

What was this year full of violence and hate crimes against people of Asian descent like for you?

We have to support each other. And I’ve been very grateful for the phone calls, the messages, the letters that I’ve received. I think Tyler Perry said some very right things at the ceremony. Sometimes it’s hard to have those conversations, but you can just reach out and ask, “Are you okay? What can I do?” It means so much. Walk down the street and smile at a stranger, it might just make your day better. So I think we have to start with ourselves, with even if only a small circle of communication that we’re in. And if we all do that, I think we can make a difference.

“Forevermore” will have Marvel’s first gay superhero, a deaf character, and a generally impressive international cast. Did Marvelf say yes to all these things?

It was just an incredible experience working with the Marvel team. I should have been careful about saying “my vision,” although I do want people to know that they fully supported what I wanted to do. I want everyone to understand that. And the fact that I had the support of this incredibly talented team, some of the most talented artists in the world. And it really was a significant challenge to make this particular film, but they let me lead the process. So, the answer is yes.

We know that you’ve worked on your other films before with small, close-knit teams. How different was the process with “Forever?”

As far as Marvel is concerned, they knew from the beginning what I wanted to make this movie, how I wanted to make it. I don’t like to have hundreds of people standing around me, after all. So they tried very hard to adapt how to run the set the way I wanted to work. They have whole armies of real professionals, but each of them knew that they had better stay out of the way.

• What was the most challenging moment working on the DC Cinematic Universe?

It was more than a moment. It just all seems related to the fact that Zach left the project because of the family problems he had and everything that followed. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. I’ll be frank, it was more than that, because when your director leaves a film he’s directed before extensive additional filming has even begun, I don’t want to call it a “moment.” As usual, the most important thing is hidden from view, and it’s much more than the tip of the iceberg. Not only that, but we also had to deal with the fact that the tone of the film and some of the story lines had to be revised during the re-shooting process. We also had to deal with the fact that Gal Gadot had just had back surgery because she injured it on the set of “Wonder Woman” and injured it again while working on “Justice League.” So, after the surgery, she couldn’t travel. We wanted to shoot as many additional scenes as we could in the UK, but we couldn’t do all of that because we needed Gal to do it.

On top of that, we were dealing with very difficult scenes. They were extremely complicated in terms of structure and shooting problems, and of course we were hoping Henry Cavill could shave off his mustache and beard. We were very worried that we couldn’t do it with the graphics in a seamless way. And in fact, we were right. Starting the film as Superman and making his face look funny, I wouldn’t say that was one of the good decisions. But it was a decision that was made because of many other circumstances. We needed to keep the release date, because the plans of all our promotional partners, were related to that date, all the theaters had reservations for that release date. IMAX, for example. Plus, it was Christmas Day ahead, which would have meant a lot of revenue for Warner Bros. at that particular time. They just didn’t have another large-scale, blockbuster movie to replace it.

• How is the collaboration with Warners/DC structured? Are you automatically attached to all the Suicide Squad sequels? Do you have a certain number of DC movies that you’re attached to?

If it was a Superman movie involving Henry, I’d be involved at least a couple more times. If it was a Batman-related project, such as “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” or “Justice League,” I would be involved in those. “Suicide Squad”-I’d be involved in those up to a point. I’m not affiliated with Aquaman. That’s Peter Safran territory. I have nothing to do with the “Shazam!” movies. But I still have a commitment to Suicide Squad, which I’m excited about. I hope that James (Gunn), when he has some time, will come back and see if he can do any more of this, because he’s already done such an amazing job. I would definitely be a part of that. Probably another “Justice League,” although I don’t think that’s going to happen anytime soon.

• You’ve had a lot of experience with Snyder and Nolan. Do you see a reality in which either of those two would come back and make a DC Comics movie? Snyder could do a lot more, but are there any such plans? And Nolan doesn’t seem to be interested in doing any more DC movies or working with Warner at all. What do you think?

I’m going to give you a Terry Gilliam quote. He and my first wife fiercely argued over his version of The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. And he was sure he would no longer be associated with anything having to do with our studio. And then I offered him “Twelve Monkeys,” and he laughed and said: “Really, you could never burn bridges in Hollywood all the way.” The thing is, I would never say “never” about anything when it comes to entertainment, different ideas, ways to get back.

• Evelyn was under as much stress as possible, but previously she had a husband she could trust. Can you talk about her transformation into a single mother and how she had to cope with those circumstances?

Emily Blunt: Sure. This character is so close to me and deeply personal to me. She acts with a kind of biblical ferocity when it comes to protecting her children, and I think that’s what I just adore about her as a person. But here she is, and the stakes have just risen to an exponential degree: she’s lost her husband, she has a newborn baby, no home; everything has burned to the ground. Where is she going? What the hell is this man going to do to protect her three children? How far will she go to protect these children? It turns out that very far.

But I also think this movie is emotionally even deeper than the first one. Because you’re dealing with grief, you’re dealing with a family who can’t step from foot to foot without feeling threatened. Their whole world has just been torn apart, and it hasn’t really been safe before. That’s why I always thought it was a good idea; that this family should take a chance and their world would be bigger; the stakes would be higher.

• There are so many layers to this movie, and I think you just lifted the veil. What is it about?

Emily Blunt: This movie? In the first episode, the audience learns how a family survived in this world. But how did other people survive? And how were they affected by what happened? I think that’s really the main theme – a story about humanity. You will see not only resilience and attempts to rebuild civilization, but also disunity; the idea of closing doors and borders; trying to answer the question of how far could you go to reach out to your neighbor? I think it was a really fascinating challenge for John to make sense of how other people have experienced all this.

• Rumor has it that you recently met with Marvel. We know that’s going to come up a lot.

Emily Blunt: That’s not true. It’s not true.

• Well, let’s say there’s Sue Storm. She has so many fans that the Internet is literally going crazy about it. What do you think about fulfilling fans’ wishes and playing Sue?

Emily Blunt: I suppose fan casting is great and very flattering for me. Purely hypothetically, and no one has talked to me about it seriously, my response is, “That’s great!” But I don’t know what else to say about it.

• DC has had its ups and downs in recent years, unlike Marvel. If you were running DC…?

David S. Goyer: Which I would never want to do.

• But let’s assume you’re at the helm. What steps would you take next?

David S. Goyer: I think the main problem with DC is that Marvel has had absolutely consistent management for the last 15 years or more, whereas DC has not. The latter had all the changes depending on who was running them. This is fundamentally wrong. It’s hard to make any significant progress when there are constant changes in management. Another feature that has made Marvel incredibly successful is their dedication to the source material. Ant-Man remains Ant-Man. The Hulk remains the Hulk. They don’t try to change things. I would suggest trying to get closer to the source material. All in all, it’s a consistent universe, consistent direction and faithfulness to the source material.

• Some, including us, consider “The Dark Knight” to be one of the best superhero comic book adaptations. Which film do you think deserves that definition?

David S. Goyer: I can give you my top four. “The Dark Knight,” “Logan,” “First Avenger 2: The Other War” and “Thor 3: Ragnarok.”

• Name one comic book character whose story you always wanted to adapt but never did?

David S. Goyer: There are things I wrote that never made it to the screen. I did an early draft of “Doctor Strange” about 18 years ago. I would have loved to have written a screenplay for a Hulk movie: he was my favorite character as a kid.

• What was the worst comment you ever got from a studio about your script?

David S. Goyer: There was one story while working on the Man of Steel adaptation. When in the finale Superman uses the capsule in which he arrived on Earth as a child to bring down General Zod’s ship. The comments we got from the studio said, “You have to change that.” We asked why? They said, “Because if Superman uses that capsule to save the city and it gets destroyed, how will he ever get home to Krypton?” A long pause ensued, and we replied, “Uh. Krypton exploded. You saw it for 30 minutes!”

• Has there been a so-called “writer’s stupor” in your career, and how did you overcome it?

When Chris (Nolan) and I were working on the script for The Dark Knight 2: Legend Reborn, we had some problems with the middle of the film. It was a whole series of episodes: How Bruce was going to defeat Bane, how he was going to escape from the Pit, and how to bring up the fact that the kid was actually Talia. Chris and I just hit a wall, and he suggested we take a break for a week and put the pencils away. It’s kind of counterintuitive because you think you have to be immersed in the material all the time. But often when you have a writing stupor, it’s best to just walk away, do something completely different, and just hope that your subconscious will come to the rescue.

But in the speech of the week, I reread the first few years of comics and wrote the first few pages of the Superman movie script. So when we got back, Chris said: “Well, do you have any ideas?” I replied, “Yes, I do, but about an adaptation about Superman that has nothing to do with ‘Legend Reborn.'” That’s how Man of Steel came about. We ended up submitting it to Warner Bros.

Released by Image Comics in 2018, “Song of Oblivion” is about Nathan Cole, a man who makes daily trips to try to rescue those still in Oblivion, a population center in Philadelphia that went missing a decade ago, along with its 300,000 residents.

“We were thrilled to find such wonderful partners at New Republic and Nine Stories. Both companies have terrific reputations for top-notch storytelling at the highest level, and we can’t wait for Jake to bring this character to life on the big screen. We are so lucky to have assembled a team that is as passionate about this comic book as we are,” Kirkman said in a statement on the occasion.
